Headed to the World Series!

Three Cardinals were picked up by the Braintree White Sox has Braintree makes it's second consecutive trip to the Stan Musial World Series. Pitcher Pat Martin, pitcher/outfield Jeff Puopolo and outfielder John Keating were all asked to join the White Sox in the trek to Houston, Texas for the 2011 SMWS.

The White Sox won their first two games in the 2010 World Series before falling to the eventual runner-ups Bayamon Vaqueros and 2010 Champion Canton Stallions.

Best of luck to the White Sox and the three Cardinals representatives!

Season End

The Cardinals season came to a close last night. The team would like to thank all the players and fans for the continued support through the summer. The players would also like to thank the coaching staff, Coach Lou and Coach John, along with the front office, Joe Reis, as they continued to keep the Cardinals in the top of the league and operate the organization in an outstanding fashion.

Be sure to keep an eye out for many Cardinals players in their collegiate seasons come February 2012 along with a few guys that have some big tryouts with Major League teams and local Independent League teams. Any transactions can be reported to Matt Roache at mtroache3@yahoo.com.

Good luck!

Game 3 - Phillies, 2-1, Loss

Set the scene: Marc Doyle, a draftee from the South Shore Warriors, has thrown a little more than 80 pitches and let up just two hits as he started the top of the 7th with a 1-0 lead. A quick single by the lead-off man was held at bay by a force ground out at 2nd in the next AB. Jim Perron, who started the season with the Cardinals, stepped to the plate and Doyle had him swinging at two beautiful breaking balls to tally the strikeout. A walk in the next at-bat by former Cardinal Pete Hogan and we have 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Former Cardinal Jon Norris steps to the plate and quickly gets a 2-2 count after two big swings and misses. A lined one hopper to third and the final out is in hand but the call simply went the wrong way. A tough walk to a guy that didn't want to swing the bat allowed the tying run to cross the plate and an error allowed the go ahead run in.

Rockland scored an unearned run in the 4th with back-to-back errors to lead off the inning. John Granahan and Brian Medairos executed a double steal and Josh Sullivan grounded out to the shortstop that was playing deeper than expected, scoring the Cardinals lone run.

Doyle pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing three hits and striking out seven while walking five (one hit batter). Brian Medairos was 2-for-3 with a stolen base in the setback.

Game 2 - Kingston (NSBL), 2-1 (F/10), Loss

Jeff Puopolo did as much as he could on the mound for the Cardinals but Rockland's bats couldn't produce the go-ahead run with runners on third twice in the extra frames.

Puopolo struck out 10 batters in 9 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs and just three hits to the North Shore's Kingston Knight Owls in Round 2 action of the Stan Musial MA/RI District Tournament. The Cardinals were held to one hit in the first six innings before a leadoff single to right field by Brian Medairos got things going in the top of the 7th inning. A Matt Drew single moved Medairos to third and a costly wild pitch brought the tying run across. Medairos led off the 9th inning with a double and was sacrificed over to 3rd by John Granahan. Rockland could not bring Medairos home as the Cardinals fell 2-1 in 10 innings.

Rockland faces off against Cranberry League foe Weymouth on Tuesday night in Rockland Stadium beginning at 6:30pm.

7-23-2011

Game 1 - Cardinals, 4-0, Win

Rockland native Pat Martin threw a complete game one hitter en route to a 4-0 win over the Mudville Nine (RI) in Stan Musial District Tournament 1st round play.

Martin walked three and struck out four while giving up his lone hit to Andrew Smiley with one out in the top of the seventh inning. The Cardinals were shut down thru five innings before a lead off walk by Brian Medairos got the ball rolling. An errant double play attempt and bunt single by John Granahan loaded the bases for Josh Sullivan's sacrfice fly to left field. Rockland didn't stop at one as singles by Matt Drew, Jeff Puopolo and Tim Sweeney plated the final three runs.

Sweeney went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Puopolo was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI. The Cardinals take on Kingston from the North Shore League in day 2 action on Sunday July 24th at 12pm in Rockland.

Practice: Week of 7/18

This week the Cardinals will hold two practices, one on Tuesday night and one on Thursday night, at 7pm at Rockland Stadium. All players are expected to be there!

7-15-2011

Game 22 - Cardinals, 4-3, Win

A must win situation for the Cardinals saw their 5-game winner, Pat Martin, take the hill and he did not dissappoint. Martin threw six innings in the victory for Rockland while surrendering six hits, two earned runs and striking out six.

Rockland took the early lead with an RBI single to right by bat breaker extraordinaire/right fielder AJ Roache. Brian Medairos came to the plate next and laced another single to right and was inches away from an RBI single of his own before Matt Roache slid into the catcher and was punched out. Weymouth bounced back with a run in the 3rd and a run in the 4th inning to take a 2-1 lead. Jeff Puopolo scored in the 5th inning for Rockland after a one-out walk, a sacrifice bunt by Zach Littman and an RBI single by catcher Joe Carlier. The Cardinals tacked the eventual winning runs in the 5th as Medairos and first baseman John Granahan scored on a John Keating double to deep centerfield in the 6th.

Medairos and John Phelan each had two hits for the Cardinals in the victory. Joe Bandini kept the door shut in the final inning for the Cards.

UPDATE!

From the looks of it, the Cardinals will not be playing their postponed games against Plymouth and Braintree. After scheduling a game against the White Sox and having them not show up and then traveling to Carver to play Plymouth and get rained out prior to the first pitch, Rockland will look to get their final regular season game in tonight against Weymouth.

THIS GAME IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR AN 8pm START AT ROCKLAND HIGH SCHOOL!

Rockland has clinched a spot in the Stan Musial MA/RI District Tournament and could be the two, three or four seed depending on tonight's outcomes.

Scenarios

A Cardinals win and Canton loss to Easton would give the Cardinals the 2 seed in the Stan Musial Tourney.

A Cardinals win and Canton win over Easton would give the Cardinals the 3 seed in the Stan Musial Tourney.

A Cardinals loss to Weymouth will knock Rockland down to the 4 seed in the Stan Musial Tourney.

Game Change!

Due to field complications, Thursday nights game at Canton has been moved to Rockland for a 7:30pm start. Canton will still be the home team but the game will be played at Rockland Stadium.

6-30-2011

Game 18 - Phillies 3-0, Loss

The top of the 1st inning for Matt Drew saw Weymouth knock three ball off of Cardinals gloves. We'd still be playing otherwise because Drew kept the Phillies at bay from that point forward. Drew was left shortchanged when the Cardinals bats left 11 batters on for the game including three innings with the bases loaded and two outs.

Drew went the distance allowing five hits and three runs in the setback. Tim Sweeney, his second day on the job out in centerfield, went 1-for-3 and reached third base safely three times in the game. Brian Medairos went 1-for-2. The Cardinals take on the Phillies with one last shot at redemption on July 14th at Weymouth High.

Game 17 - Cardinals 5-2, Win

Well it's about damn time, that's for sure. It only took Rockland (well, Jay Thompson and Matt Roache) three years but we finally beat Middleboro again. The Cardinals hopped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a one out single by Brian Medairos followed by a two out walk by John Phelan which led to John Keating's two RBI double to left center.

Starting pitcher Jeff Puopolo stepped to the plate, while battling an illness, and smacked a single to left scoring Keating and giving Rockland the three run lead. Puopolo's sickness took a physical toll on him that was evident when he walked three batters in a row with one out in the first inning. He bounced back quick with a strikeout and a stellar defensive play by John Granahan at first base to end the inning and the threat. "Pop" allowed a baserunner in every inning but didn't allow a run until the 5th, after the Cardinals took a 5-0 lead. Keating, playing left field, hosed a runner trying to score from second base to stop the bleeding.

Joe Bandini came in for the two inning save allowing one hit and striking out two. Keating and Puopolo had two RBI each while Tim Sweeney had two hits in his Cardinals debut.

6-25-2011

Game 15 - Cardinals 1-0, Win

Game 16 - Warriors 4-2, Loss

A pitching battle fell in favor of the Cardinals as Pat Martin went the distance picking up his league-leading fourth win of the year. The lone run in game one came off the bat of Grady Vigneau as he poked a single to left field which scored John Granahan from second. Granahan and Matt Drew each walked in their at-bat before South Shore gathered two quick outs leading to Vigneau's single. Vigneau went 1-for-1 with a walk and RBI.

Bobby Fredrickson was looking for his second win of the season coming into game two and right fielder AJ Roache kept giving him a chance. In the top half of the 3rd and 5th innings, Fredrickson allowed a run only to have Roache step to the plate in the bottom of the inning and lace an RBI single. South Shore tallied two runs in the 7th inning and Rockland's scoring chance was short-lived as the Warriors spun a double play to end the game.

6-22-2011

Game 14 - Cardinals 11-3, Win

The end of a four game losing streak came behind a five inning outing from Jay Thompson and two perfect innings of relief from John Quigg.

Rockland had five players with multiple hits including a 4-for-5, three runs scored performance from John Phelan and 3-for-4 efforts from John Granahan (3 RBI) and Josh Sullivan (4 RBI) in the victory. The Cards scored early with hits from the first six batters of the game including a three-run triple by Sullivan. Brian Medairos and John Keating had two hits each for Rockland.

6-20-2011

Game 11 - A's 9-4, Loss

Game 12 - Bolts 3-1, Loss

Game 13 - Bolts 4-1, Loss

Rockland is on a bit of a skid dropping their last four games while gathering a lowly six runs in the recent stretch.

Despite the Happy Father's Day shouts from the dugout on Sunday, Rockland couldn't produce to make the Dad's proud as Middleboro won their 7th and 8th consecutive game against the Cardinals, dating back two full seasons.

Pat Martin only allowed two earned runs in game one while Mike Mahoney let up three earned in game two while the bats stayed silent. Jeff Puopolo was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI in game one while Joe Carlier went 3-for-3 with the lone run scored in game two.

Rockland hopes to bounce back tonight against Brockton at Edgars Field as Jay Thompson is slated to take the hill.

**Statistics are now updated thru 6-19-11**

6-15-2011

Game 9 - Cardinals 3-1, Win

Game 10 - White Sox 6-0, Loss

Rockland topped the Dirtdogs for the second time this season and will have to face them once more in hopes of sweeping the season series. Pat Martin got the start and win for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals fell behind veteran Jay Thompson on Tuesday evening to defending Cranberry League Champion Braintree White Sox. The pitching attack of Asselin and Troup proved to be too much as Rockland dropped their first game at home this season.

6-12-2011

CANCELLED

Sunday's double-header has been postponed due to inclement weather. No make-up date has been announced yet.

6-11-2011

Congratulations Brian Maloney!

This past weekend former Cardinals pitcher Brian Maloney, Brockton, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. Maloney pitched in three games with a record of 2-1 after joining the team mid-season. He collected back-to-back wins in his first two starts against Northeast Region representative Easton and the Cape Cod Braves. Maloney struck out the side in the first inning of the Cape Cod double header on a nine pitch, nine strike inning. Brian's lone loss on the season was an injury shortened start against the 2010 Cranberry League Champion Braintree White Sox.

Maloney joined a Worcester team in the postseason when Rockland was eliminated from the MA/RI District Championship.

Good luck Brian!

6-7-2011

Game 8 - Phillies 4-0, Loss

John Phelan secured the only hit on a bunt single in the sixth inning as the Cardinals lose their first game in an unpleasant fashion to the Weymouth Phillies. Rockland is back in action on Sunday to take on South Shore for a doubleheader in Rockland beginning at 5pm.

Stats will be updated when they are called in.

6-6-2011

Game 6 - Cardinals 3-0, Win

Game 7 - Cardinals 9-8 (F/11), Win

In game one Pat Martin struck out 12 batters in five innings of work, paving the way for a two inning save from Matt Drew to shut down the Plymouth Pirates 3-0. Josh Sullivan has two singles and two RBI.

Game two was a different story that had to be seen to be believed. Rockland was down 5-0 in the 5th inning and then again down 8-5 in the bottom of the 7th only to send the game to extra innings thanks to an old familiar face. After a year hiatus from the Cardinals, John Phelan came thru with a two-out, bases loaded triple in the inning, only to be thrown out at home plate. Drew came in again and collected the win in the scorebook as he threw all four of the extra frames to give the Cardinals the chance to win. Drew picked up his first win of the season while tallying two hits and an RBI, all of which came after his second save of the season in game one.

6-3-2011

Keating CBL Player of the Week

As many of the Cardinals players had anticipated, John Keating was named the Cranberry Baseball League Player of the Week. Keating hit .667 in the first 5 games for the Cardinals while hitting a league leading three doubles and eight RBI.

www.cranberryleague.com

6-2-2011

Game 5 - Cardinals 13-4 F/6, Win

Rockland fell behind early but overcame a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 3rd with a five run inning highlighted by Josh Sullivan's two-run double after a John Keating intentional walk. Three runs in the 4th, two in the 5th and one in the sixth was enough for the umpires to call it a game and pack their bags to head home.

**Let's note that there were stat changes to the Easton doubleheader as the starting pitcher's going four innings were good enough for a win while both game's relievers throwing three was worthy of the save.**

6-2-2011

Game 4 - Cardinals 5-5, Tie

Rockland held a 5-1 lead at one point in the game and a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning. An errant throw led to Canton's lone run in the inning and the eventual tie game due to darkness.

5-29-2011

Game 2 - Cardinals 3-2, Win

Game 3 - Cardinals 3-1, Win

Rockland took two games on the road from last years Northeast representative in the Stan Musial World Series. The Cardinals posted three runs in the 2nd inning of game one and held Easton scoreless into the 7th with the help of a few nice defensive stops, i.e. John Granahan's dive to his left at 3rd base on a line shot. Matt Drew grabbed the win with 3 innings of relief.

Bob Fredrickson and Jeff Puopolo combined for a 6 2/3 inning no-hitter until the 2-strike 2-out count in the bottom of the 7th saw a single up the middle. The next batter laced another single which scored Easton's lone run before Rockland's quick-witted defense caught a runner off 2nd base a bit too far to end the game. John Keating and Jim Perron combined to go 5-for-8 in game 2 for the Cardinals.

5-27-2011

Game 1- Cardinals 10-0, Win

Mike Mahoney picked up the win in game 1 of the season with a 6 inning shutout while allowing just three hits and striking out five for the Cardinals. John Keating went 4-for-4 with 4 RBI, a 2B and a run scored.
